What Feng Shui says about uncomfortable spaces.

You know the feeling.

Have you ever noticed when you walk into a room and something just doesn’t feel right?

Do you find yourself looking over your shoulder when you are alone? Do you see shadows in the corner of your eye, but when you look again they are gone? Do you experience arguments regularly in one particular room? Or have you ever turned the lights off in the living room and had a sudden urge to run as fast as you can to your bedroom?

Have you ever stopped to think why?

What if I told you that it’s not your imagination and what you are feeling is completely real?

But if it isn’t your imagination, then what is it?

Your home and work environments are telling you something.

Feng shui has been practised for over 3000 years. At its heart is one idea: your home and work environment is like a mirror. It reflects back the energy of the people living/working in it, to you, your family and everyone who walks through the door.

Think about the last time you walked into someone's home and immediately felt comfortable, or the time you walked into a space and wanted to leave almost instantly (but didn’t know why).

It is Qi (the energy of a space) communicating with your energy field and it affects you whether you are aware of it or not.

Your home and the place you work is an extension of you. It holds your stress, joy, grief, arguments and your calm moments. Over time if the challenging energy is not tended to, it can stagnate and even turn into an entity or thought form of it’s own.

This stagnant challenging energy within a space, has a way of making itself known to those who live or work there. Most people just don’t realise how it’s impacting them.

Let’s talk about clutter.

Before we look at anything energetic, we have to talk about clutter, because it is almost always the first thing to show up when things don’t feel great.

Physical clutter blocks Qi from moving freely through a space. Things like broken objects, boxes, piles of clothes or paperwork, things you no longer use or love, things stuffed into corners and cupboards you haven't opened in years, all of it creates stagnation. When energy can't move through a home or business, the people living and working in it can start to be impacted by it. People may feel fatigue, confusion, illness, stuck or stress etc.

Clutter in your home and work environment is usually a reflection of something happening internally (on the emotional level).

Suppressed emotions, unfinished business, or endless thoughts you haven't resolved are signals of a cluttered mind. This internal clutter starts to show up in the physical space around you. Decluttering your home and work environment along with doing the internal work (on the emotions) tend to go hand in hand.

One without the other only gets you part of the way there.

So if your home or workspace feels off, start with de-cluttering before anything else. Look at what you're holding onto and ask yourself honestly whether it's still serving you.

What the clutter at home is really telling you

Different areas of your home correspond to different people and areas of your life. Where you have clutter is rarely random. It tends to show up in the exact areas that are reflecting what is happening emotionally for the people living there.

A pile of things that never gets dealt with in one part of the house might be sitting in the area that corresponds to your relationships. Chaos in another corner might be sitting exactly where your career or finances map to. A room nobody goes into, that slowly fills with things nobody wants to deal with, often tells a story about something the household is collectively avoiding.

I have walked into homes where the clutter told me almost everything I needed to know about what was going on for the family before they said a word. Particular areas completely blocked off or rooms that have become dumping grounds, or things piling up in the same spot no matter how many times they get cleared are all signals something requires further attention.

This is one of the most powerful things a Feng Shui consultation can reveal. It’s not just where the clutter is, but what it is pointing to and who it effects. When you understand what a space is reflecting back at you, you can start to work on both levels at once. The physical (the home) and the emotional (the person living in it).

A lot of people find it hard to face the emotional side of things, so I suggest they tackle the physical first. This is actually one of the fastest ways to start feeling yourself again.

So you clear the clutter, and it still feels wrong

Sometimes the issue goes deeper. If a space has held something heavy for a long time, clearing the physical clutter may not be enough to shift it.

Homes hold memory and spaces absorb the emotional experiences of everyone who has ever lived in them. Strong emotions, whether that's sustained stress, grief, conflict or trauma, can leave an energetic imprint that lingers long after the people and the circumstances are gone. You might feel it as a heaviness in a particular room or a sense of unease you can't explain. It could even be a feeling that something happened there, even if you don’t know what.

This is one of the most common things I find when I assess a home. The family living there now is fine; their relationship is good, their lives are relatively settled. But the house has a history they didn't know about and that history is still present in the energy of the space.

A sacred space clearing addresses exactly this. It is the process of intentionally releasing what no longer belongs in a space and setting a clear intention for what you want it to hold instead. Think of it like hitting a reset button on the energetic atmosphere of your home.

What actually changes

People who have a space clearing consistently say the same things afterwards; the home feels lighter, easier to breathe in, the space feels more like theirs, their sleep improves, the unease goes away, children settle and people stop having the same arguments in the same room.

It is one of the most immediate shifts I see in this work, and often the simplest to explain. You cleared what was there, allowing more room for something new to come in to take its place.

Your home should feel like a relief to walk into, it should restore you and be the place where your nervous system finally gets to exhale.

If it doesn't feel that way right now, then it’s probably time we have a chat.

I offer home Feng Shui consultations and Sacred Space clearings in person across Perth and online (Australia wide). If something in your home has never felt right, get in touch and let's find out why.
